About Nikolaev city in Ukraine

In over 220 years, Nikolaev city (another name Nikolayev and Ukrainian name is Mykolaiv or Mytolayiv) was able to make a good name for itself as an important business and political center, having become the cultured center of southern Ukraine. Its citizens love their wonderful place which has enormous potentials of economical development and well being.

The history of Nikolaev city began in 1789 when building of the shipyard was developed in the lade of Ingul river. That was Prince Grigoriy Potyomkin who kept a vigilant eye on this process and after a year a small place arouse in the southern part of Ukraine which was named Nikolaev city.

Nikolaev Ukraine has more than 450 thousand inhabitants and is the ninth largest city at the present time in Ukraine.

All over the world Nikolaev Ukraine is famous as the Nikolaev city of brides. When you are sitting in Nikolaev cafes during summer time on our main street Sobornaya you will not be able to take your eyes off the street where stunningly beautiful single Nikolaev ladies are walking alone or with others.

The main technologies in Nikolaev city are engineering and metal-working which service the shipbuilding and energy machine building industries in the city with skilled labour and know-how. These industries provide about 50% of the total Ukrainian shipbuilding production, more than 90% in manufacturing of state gas turbines and 80% of argil accounting for aluminum.

Shipbuilding in Nikolaev Ukraine consists of three large shipbuilding plants which are able to build and supply any kind of ships. These are state run enterprises and are called "Chernomorsky shipbuilding plant", "Shipbuilding plant of 61 Communars" and "Ocean". Tankers, dry cargo carriers, reefer ships, trawlers, warships of different types are all produced at these powerful dockyards.

In addition there some electrical and electronic industry have established themselves in the city, complete with high master degree staff.

The Industrial incorporation "Zorya" and research technical union "Mashproekt" make gas-turbine units and engines for the shipbuilding industry, transportation of natural gas and the production of electricity. Their output has a recognised high class in world standard and have become an article of worldwide export. Light industry is introduced by numerous sewing factories which make clothes for men, women and children ("Evis", "Yuzhanka", "Iskra"), knitting and haberdashery products ("Aura", "Angela"), leather shoes ("Nikkozh" and "Niko", "Chervoni Vitryla").

One of the most important parts in the city's economy belongs to the foodstuffs industry. The Meat industry in Nikolaev Ukraine has a meat packing plant, poultry factory, numerous sausage-meat plants, bakery plants and bake houses. "Lactalis - Ukraine" is leader among enterprises of dairy products. There many others plants in Nikolaev such as "Nikolaev Confectionary Plant"; "Sandora" (owned by PepsiCo) which makes different cans, drinks and juices; "Nektar" which makes drinks, confectionary, mayonnaise; alcoholic beverage plant and famous brewery "Yantar" (part of SanInBev), whose products have a wide Ukrainian recognition.

Widespread transport infrastructure, which includes sea and river ports, railway communication, two airports and freeway in conjunction with powerful industrial base, research and designed institutions, construction department, make significant potential for the city's wellbeing.

Important for the city are the vital activities of support and development in the fields of science, education, culture and health care.

Nikolaev is a famous center of higher education and science. Every year its institutions release about 2,5 thousand of high degree specialists. And the most interesting fact is that half of these crafts could not be obtained anywhere else in the country. Ukrainian State Sea Technical University, working in the field of the newest technologies for ship production, Nikolaev National Pedagogical University, Nikolaev department of Kiev State Institute of Culture and Agrarian Academy should be marked down among leading institutions of Nikolaev Ukraine.

There are seven colleges and junior technical schools, polytechnic college, building college, four higher schools, including medical and musical ones. About 73 thousand of young people go to 80 comprehensive schools. Lately some changes in the system of secondary level school education happened which consisted in the intention of giving mutual conditions for learning to the most capable children. Two humanitarian gymnasiums were created with this purpose. One gymnasium was built with pedagogical grade. Information-mathematical, physico-mathematical and two economical lyceums work in Nikolaev as well. A school of midshipmen is attached to Ukrainian State Sea University.

Nikolaev has considerable resources of health care. It has 16 main hospitals, 5 children hospitals, 5 maternity homes, 14 day hospital centers and polyclinics and 7 health centers.

Nikolaev Ukraine is well known by its sport schools' traditions. Higher school of physical culture and sport, higher school of sport skill and 24 sport schools for children and juveniles make preparation of sportsmen in this city.

There are three stadiums such as Palace of Sport which is called "Zorya", sport complex "Nadia", sport combine "Gart", regional chess club for all the sportsmen and solicitous people.

There is fertile spiritual and cultural potential here. The oldest art theatre of Russian drama and collective of regional philharmonic attract the biggest attention among the citizens. The activity of different cultural clubs contributes the development of folk art. There are 2 Palaces of Culture here, 10 cultural centers and 25 clubs. Museums, exhibition's halls and art salons work as well.

Nikolaev Zoo is one of the oldest and arranged constructions in Ukraine which is very popular among its citizens.

A wonderful place called "Skazka" was built in Nikolaev for the children to play and have fun.
